How often should I tune my piano? It depends on several factors. Generally get your piano tuned at least once per year. If the piano sounds tinny or "honky-tonkish", it is past time. If you are an advanced player, are a piano teacher, or have an expensive instrument, get the piano tuned every 6 months. Pianos that have not been tuned for more than 2 years most likely need a tune and may need a "pitch raise".
How long does a piano tuning take? Tuning a piano typically takes 1 1/2 hours, but allow up to 3 hours for your tuning session in case your piano needs special attention.
What are your working hours? I am a one man shop, and make my own hours. I work with you to schedule a day/time that works for you! Typically I book tuning sessions for early afternoon or about 6pm, but I am very flexible!
What is a Pitch Raise? Do I need one? A Pitch Raise is a coarse tuning procedure that is sometimes needed before a regular fine tuning. Typically a piano may need a pitch raise if the tuning is way off, does not hold its tuning, or has not been tuned in a long time. A pitch raise pulls the strings tighter than needed for regular fine tuning (Overpull). The amount of overpull needed to stabilize the piano is calculated for each key. The fine tuning can be done right after the pitch raise. Allow about 45 minutes for a pitch raise, and costs an additional fee of $60. Getting regular tuning keeps the piano more stable and avoids getting a pitch raise. I don't do pitch raises unless absolutely necessary, and I discuss it with you beforehand so you are not surprised with additional costs.
Do piano strings need to be replaced? How often? Unlike guitar strings, piano strings are designed to last the lifetime of the piano. They do not need to be replaced unless they break. Really old strings may rust, which can alter the tone of the string and also make the string prone to breakage, especially when tuning or doing a pitch raise. If a string breaks during a tuning because of rust or age, the customer is responsible for the cost of replacing the string. Bass strings cost around $50 but rarely break. Treble strings are much more fragile, but replacing them is inexpensive. An hourly rate charge is applied for replacing strings. Piano tuners HATE having to replace a string! Trying to replace a string yourself is definitely NOT RECOMMENDED. It takes a skilled piano tech to properly replace strings.
Can I tune my piano myself? I am not giving a sales pitch- tuning a piano properly takes skill, experience, and the proper tools. It requires learning how to "set the pins" and acquiring a touch to avoiding instability, breaking strings or worse. Learning just how to tune can take years to perfect. Also many times during a tuning the technician will notice that some keys are sticking or are not striking the strings properly, which requires the even more difficult skill of "regulating" the piano. Unless you are studying to be a professional tuner, it isn't worth the risk to tune your piano yourself.
